Small hamburger “sliders” were named in the 1940s by US Navy sailors. The nickname was a reference to their greasiness. The first sliders were created in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas by the American chain restaurant, White Castle. Sliders began evolving in the early 2000s and are now made with chicken, pork, and veal. Upscale restaurants even offer this fun alternative to traditional hamburgers. Recipes vary, with some including dry onion soup mix in the meat. Sliders can be made with or without cheese.
Recipe Servings: 12
- Preheat oven to 400°F.
- Sprinkle onion over bottom of 9 x 13-inch casserole dish.
- Gently pat ground beef over onions, pressing evenly.
- Poke small holes in meat. A straw is a good tool for this.
- Evenly sprinkle seasoned salt over meat.
- Bake for 20 minutes.
- Allow meat to rest and drain any fat and liquid from dish.
- Cut a large piece of aluminum foil and place into another large baking dish or atop a cookie sheet.
- Place bottom halves of rolls on foil.
- Cut hamburger with pizza cutter into 24 square patties.
- Place a patty on each roll, layer on cheese, and 2 pickles.
- Add ketchup and mustard to each patty.
- Melt butter and then mix in Worcestershire sauce and 1 teaspoon mustard.
- Top the patties with other half of roll then brush butter sauce over roll tops.
- Cover sliders with aluminum foil and bake until cheese melts.
